FC Barcelona wins Club World Cup

Barcelona won it's second Club World Cup in three years on Sunday, beating Brazilian team Santos 4-0. Fans watching the game in the International Stadium Yokohama, in Japan, saw the UEFA champions dominate the CONMEBOL champions in a display of ruthlessness that further cemented their status as the best club team in the world. The match had been hyped as a showdown between Barcelona's Argentinian striker, Lionel Messi, and Brazil's Neymar, the 19 year old boy wonder, but in the end it was no contest, with Messi commanding the play and netting twice.

The South American champions were overpowered in the first 45 minutes, and the game was all but over when the whistle blew for half time, with Barcelona leading by three goals to nil. Messi was the first to score, in the 17th minute with a splendid left-footed chip over Santos goalkeeper Rafael Cabral. Seven minutes later, Dani Alves passed the ball to Xavi, who took a shot from 16 yards out and watched the ball pass Cabral into the back of the net. Cesc Fabregas scored the third goal from close range on the stroke of half time, after hitting the post a few minutes before. The crowd of 68,000 were witness to a compelling display of skill and dominance from the Spanish side.

Santos came out in the second half and appeared determined to give Barça a run for their money. Neymar finally had a chance to pull one back in the 57th minute, only to see his shot saved by keeper Victor Valdes. Messi completed the drubbing eight minutes from time with his second goal of the game, earning him the man of the match, along with the distinction of being named the tournament's most valuable player. The win crowns a spectacular year for Josep Guardiola's side, with the trophy sitting alongside others from their victorious runs in the Champions League, La Liga and Supercopa competitions.
