Germany tears into Scotland at Euro 2024 opener

After weeks of waiting, today the Euros finally started. Germany and Scotland were the two teams to open the tournament in Munich. In this article we look into the easy victory for Germany over Scotland.

The start of this match was a pleasant one. Germany of course supported by the home crowd, but also Scotland had a lot of support. Scottish fans have been celebrating their participation already for a few days in the city center of Munich. The match was just kicked off when Florian Wirtz already had the first big opportunity to open the score. Scotland and Norwich City goalkeeper Angus Gunn blocked his attempt. The match unfolded like everybody expected from these nations. Germany controlled the start, while Scotland is fighting for their lives. In the 11th minute, Joshua Kimmich found Florian Wirtz at the edge of the box and he put the ball in the back of the net. So, after 11 exciting minutes of football, the first goal of the tournament has been scored by Wirtz.

Job done before half-time

The home nation kept control of the ball and played some entertaining football. When Kai Havertz received the ball in the box in the 19th minute, he stayed calm and played Musiala in. Musiala created space for himself with a quick feint and blasted the ball in the back of the net. Just before the end of the first half, Germany really finished the job off. A nasty foul by Ryan Porteous on Gundogan, got Portegous a red card and Germany a penalty. Kai Havertz netted the penalty, lifting the score the 3-0.

Germany continues in second half

After an entertaining first half, expectations are always high for the second half. The same with this match. Reality is that Germany was content with a 3-0 lead, while Scotland played the second half with ten men. Both managers started making changes to rest their important players for the rest of the tournament. Niclas Füllkrug was one of the players coming on. A few minutes after entering the pitch he launched a rocket into Scotland’s goal, scoring his first of the tournament and Germany’s fourth. This wasn’t the last goal of the match. First Füllkrug’s second goal was cancelled due to offside. Then it was Rudiger with an unfortunate own goal. Emre Can closed the match with a goal in the dying seconds. Gemany opens the tournament with an impressive 5-1 victory over Scotland.

Germany plays like a title contender

It’s always hard for the home nation to start off well in a tournament. They feel the support, but also the pressure from the entire nation. Especially for Germany, who are considered as one of the biggest favourites to win the Euro’s. After their first win, Euro 2024 final tickets are already sought after.
