A look into Manchester United's preseason

Manchester United recently started its preseason. In this article we dive into the results of their first two matches and look at the fixtures still to play.

Rosenborg 1-0 Manchester United: A tough start in Trondheim

Manchester United faced a stern test in their first pre-season friendly against Norwegian side Rosenborg, who are well into their domestic season. Rosenborg's dominance was evident as they hit the post four times and managed 22 shots on goal. Despite the relentless pressure, the match remained goalless until Noah Holm's late strike in the 93rd minute secured a deserved 1-0 victory for the hosts.

Erik ten Hag's selection included experienced players like Marcus Rashford, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jonny Evans, Mason Mount, and captain Casemiro. However, all outfield players were substituted at half-time in a planned switch, giving an opportunity to younger talents. Despite the changes, United struggled to match Rosenborg's intensity and cohesion.

United's young goalkeeper, Radek Vitek, was a standout performer, making six crucial saves to keep the scoreline respectable. Ten Hag acknowledged Vitek's efforts but was critical of the overall team performance, citing a lack of fitness and standards that did not meet the expectations of Manchester United.

"I have seen this is not the standard for top football," Ten Hag stated. "Top football, you have to achieve much higher standards. It starts with any individual, make sure you are fit." Ten Hag did, however, praise the second-half display of the youngsters, despite their failure to fully implement his tactical advice.

Rangers 0-2 Manchester United: A promising response in Edinburgh

Manchester United bounced back from their defeat in Trondheim with a more encouraging performance against Rangers at Murrayfield. The match saw the debut of 18-year-old centre-back Leny Yoro, whose transfer from Lille could be worth £58.9m. Yoro partnered with veteran Jonny Evans in a starting lineup that also featured Jadon Sancho, making his first United appearance in nearly a year.

United took the lead in the 39th minute when Amad Diallo, a former loanee with Rangers, cut inside from Mason Mount's pass and finished clinically. The lead was doubled in the 70th minute by Joe Hugill, who latched onto a through-ball from Maxi Oyede and executed a well-taken goal.

Ten Hag once again changed all 10 outfield players at half-time, but Yoro was a standout performer in the first half. The young centre-back demonstrated his speed and strength, effectively neutralizing Rangers' striker Cyriel Dessers. Yoro had more touches and completed more passes than any other United outfield player, including four successful long balls out of seven attempts.

"For the first time, with only one training session, it was a very mature performance," Ten Hag remarked on Yoro's display. "That's the way we saw him when we scouted him. It's great to have him, and he's very young for a centre-back. There is a lot to come, but you can see already that he has great potential."

Yoro expressed his delight at the opportunity and the support from his teammates and staff. "For me, it was incredible. It was a really good game from the team. I'm happy with my performance, and I hope we continue like that," Yoro told MUTV.
