Man United suffers late blow against Brighton

Manchester United experienced heartbreak on Saturday afternoon, falling 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion in stoppage time after a crucial and unfortunate incident involving Joshua Zirkzee. The Dutch striker, who had emerged as the hero last week, unintentionally prevented a winning goal for his team, only for João Pedro to seal the victory for Brighton in the dying moments.

Zirkzee's Misfortune Costs United

United came into the match riding high after a 1-0 win over Fulham in their Premier League opener, courtesy of Zirkzee’s late heroics. Despite his game-changing impact last week, Zirkzee started on the bench again. Under pouring rain, the match began sluggishly, with United creating the first few opportunities. However, it was Brighton who broke the deadlock just past the half-hour mark. Danny Welbeck slid in a low cross from Kaoru Mitoma, marking his 100th club goal in a career that started at United.

Ten Hag’s Second-Half Gamble

United seemed to have found an immediate response when Marcus Rashford scored from close range, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside. With his team struggling to create, Erik ten Hag introduced Zirkzee at halftime, hoping for another game-changing performance. The substitution didn’t immediately pay off, as Brighton came close to doubling their lead—Diogo Dalot cleared a James Milner effort off the line, and Welbeck’s header from a Yankuba Minteh free-kick rattled the crossbar.

Despite Brighton’s dominance, United found a way back. Noussair Mazraoui released Amad Diallo with a well-timed pass, and Diallo cut inside before unleashing a shot that deflected off Van Hecke and into the net. While Diallo was credited with the goal, Van Hecke’s attempt to block inadvertently aided United’s cause.

Agony for United as Brighton Snatch Late Win

With the score level, United pressed for a winner. A low cross from Bruno Fernandes narrowly missed Zirkzee, and Alejandro Garnacho pounced at the far post. But in a cruel twist of fate, the sliding Zirkzee couldn’t avoid contact with the ball, and the goal was disallowed for offside. The frustration only deepened in stoppage time. With the clock winding down, Brighton’s João Pedro was left unmarked and headed home to secure all three points for the hosts. United had no time to recover, suffering yet another defeat at the hands of their nemesis, Brighton.
