Arne Slot makes history with back-to-back wins

Arne Slot has continued his impressive start as Liverpool manager by winning his first home match at Anfield. The Reds secured a 2-0 victory over Brentford FC on Sunday, making Slot the first Liverpool manager since 1991 to win his opening two Premier League matches.

Slot follows in footsteps Graeme Souness

Slot's achievement matches that of Graeme Souness, who also won his first two league games as Liverpool manager during the 1991/1992 season. Slot, who joined Liverpool from Feyenoord this summer, guided his new team to a 0-2 win against Ipswich Town in his debut match last week. Since Souness, no other Liverpool manager has been able to replicate this feat—not even Jürgen Klopp. When Klopp began his tenure at Liverpool in 2015, his first match ended in a 0-0 draw against Tottenham Hotspur.

Strong start to the season

With this victory, Liverpool now sits on six points, alongside Manchester City, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Arsenal, all of whom have also maintained a perfect record after two rounds. Brentford, on the other hand, is currently in 13th place with three points from their first two games.

Liverpool took the lead in the 13th minute when Luis Díaz finished off a swift counterattack to make it 1-0. Liverpool continued to dominate, with Mohamed Salah coming close to doubling the lead, only to see his effort go wide of Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken’s goal. Twenty minutes before the end, Salah found the back of the net with a well-placed shot after being played in by Díaz on the edge of offside, sealing the 2-0 victory.

North-West derby next

In the closing minutes, Gakpo struck the crossbar, while Gravenberch, who had put in an excellent performance, was substituted to applause from the Anfield crowd in stoppage time. For defender Sepp van den Berg, recently transferred to Brentford, there were no minutes on the pitch against his former club. This victory gives Liverpool a perfect start to the season, providing a solid foundation as they prepare for a challenging run of fixtures. Slot’s early success has sparked optimism among fans, who will be eager to see how the team progresses under his leadership in the coming weeks. Starting with the upcoming North-West derby against Manchester United.
