Liverpool suffers shock defeat against Forest

Arne Slot’s reign as Liverpool manager had been near flawless until Saturday when his side suffered an unexpected setback. What appeared on paper to be a straightforward home fixture against Nottingham Forest turned out to be a challenge, as the visitors left Anfield with a historic 1-0 victory, their first in 55 years at the iconic stadium.

Slot's trusted lineup falters

Slot seemed to have settled on his preferred starting eleven, opting for the same lineup for the third match in a row. Cody Gakpo once again found himself starting from the bench, with Luis Díaz being preferred despite his late return from international duty. Dutch internationals Ryan Gravenberch and Virgil van Dijk were once again key figures in the squad as Liverpool kicked off a grueling stretch of seven matches over 22 days.

The Reds came into the match riding high after an emphatic 3-0 win over Manchester United before the international break. However, Nottingham Forest proved to be a much tougher opponent than expected. Despite Liverpool's dominance in possession and several chances, they struggled to convert their superiority into goals.

Missed opportunities

Liverpool pushed hard in the first half, with Díaz coming close on multiple occasions. Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels nearly gifted the home side an opening goal after fumbling a harmless header from Díaz, but he recovered just in time to gather the ball on the goal line. Earlier, the post had denied the Colombian an opportunity to put Liverpool ahead. Despite these near misses, Forest offered little in terms of attacking threat, focusing instead on a resolute defensive display.

Forest’s late breakthrough

Nottingham Forest remained patient and capitalized on a rare counter-attack in the closing stages. Substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi found space and unleashed a perfectly placed shot into the far corner, beating Alisson to score Forest’s first goal of the match and the first goal conceded by Liverpool this season. The 0-1 scoreline sent shockwaves through Anfield, as Forest celebrated a goal that seemed almost inevitable after Liverpool's inability to finish their chances. Slot reacted quickly, switching to a more attacking formation by deploying three defenders. He introduced Cody Gakpo and Darwin Núñez in an attempt to turn the tide. Despite Liverpool’s relentless pressure and several opportunities to equalize, they could not break through the disciplined Forest defense. Sels stood firm, and Forest held on for the famous win.

First setback of the season

The defeat brought a disappointing end to what had been a promising start to the season for Liverpool. After three consecutive victories, the loss marked their first under Slot's leadership. Meanwhile, Manchester City capitalized on Liverpool’s slip-up, beating Brentford at home and becoming the only team in the Premier League with a perfect record after four matches. This unexpected defeat will serve as a wake-up call for Liverpool, as they face a congested schedule and look to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures. For Nottingham Forest, the win marks a historic moment as they leave Anfield with all three points for the first time since the 1968/69 season.
