English teams shine in first matches of new Champions League

The new Champions League format kicked off with thrilling performances from English clubs, with Aston Villa, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City all showing their strength in the opening fixtures of the revamped competition.

Aston Villa's Triumphant Return to Europe's Elite Stage

Aston Villa made a sensational return to Europe’s top competition after more than four decades, with a dominant 3-0 win against Swiss champions BSC Young Boys. In their first Champions League appearance since winning the 1982 European Cup, Villa stamped their authority in Bern. Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans opened the scoring in the 24th minute, driving home a well-placed diagonal shot following a corner. The lead was doubled just before halftime when Jacob Ramsey capitalized on defensive errors by the Swiss side. Despite having two goals disallowed in the second half, Villa sealed their victory late in the game with a goal from Amadou Onana, who joined from Everton in the summer. This victory marks Villa’s first win on the highest European stage since defeating Dinamo Bucharest in 1982. Manager Unai Emery continues to build his European credentials, becoming the sixth coach to manage more than five different clubs in the Champions League.

Liverpool off to a winning start

Liverpool, under the guidance of Dutch manager Arne Slot, secured a 3-1 away victory against AC Milan at San Siro. After a tense start where Milan threatened to take control, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk shifted the momentum with a powerful header to give his side a 2-1 lead. Fellow Dutch internationals Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch were instrumental, with Gakpo contributing both a goal and an assist. AC Milan, a shadow of their former glory, struggled to cope with Liverpool’s intensity, especially in the second half. Despite some early nerves, Liverpool dominated proceedings and earned a crucial three points in a tough away fixture.

Arsenal held in Bergamo after Raya’s heroics

Arsenal’s return to the Champions League ended in a goalless draw against Atalanta in Bergamo, with Spanish goalkeeper David Raya stealing the headlines. In a match where Atalanta created the better chances, including a penalty, Raya’s double save — stopping both the spot-kick and the rebound — ensured that Mikel Arteta’s side left Italy with a valuable point.

Manchester City and Inter Milan settle for stalemate

In a heavyweight clash between last season’s Premier League and Serie A champions, Manchester City and Inter Milan played out a 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium. Despite a number of chances for both teams, neither could find the back of the net in what was a gripping, fast-paced encounter. City, playing in a special kit designed by Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher, dominated possession but couldn’t break down Inter’s five-man defense. Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden came closest for the reigning English champions, while Inter Milan, spearheaded by Marcus Thuram, were dangerous on the counterattack. Both sides will feel they could have taken all three points, but a point apiece was a fair reflection of a match full of high-quality football. For City, this was a solid start to their defense of the Champions League trophy, while Inter will be satisfied with holding the English giants to a draw on their home turf.

Mixed start for English clubs

The first round of matches in the new Champions League format saw strong performances from all four English teams. Aston Villa and Liverpool registered impressive away wins, while Arsenal and Manchester City both secured hard-fought draws in tough matches. With plenty of football left to play, the Premier League sides have shown they are serious contenders in the newly structured competition, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
