Former Manchester United keeper Henderson thwarts old club

Manchester United was held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park on Saturday, as former Red Devils goalkeeper Dean Henderson delivered a masterclass in goal, denying Man United on several occasions. Despite fielding a strong lineup, United could not find a way past the determined Crystal Palace defense.

United’s momentum halted after strong week

Manchester United entered the match full of confidence following a dominant cup victory over Barnsley and an impressive 3-0 win against Southampton. Manager Erik ten Hag hoped to extend this positive run against Crystal Palace, a team that had crushed United 4-0 just four months ago. However, Palace, under the guidance of Oliver Glasner, had little to offer in terms of attacking threat this time around.

United controlled possession for much of the match, but it was Henderson, who spent several years at Old Trafford, that proved to be the game’s standout performer. Early on, he denied Matthijs de Ligt’s header from a corner, setting the tone for what would become a frustrating afternoon for United’s forwards. Alejandro Garnacho, starting on the left in place of Marcus Rashford, came closest to scoring in the first half, but Henderson acrobatically saved his powerful shot aimed at the far corner.

Onana’s crucial saves keep United in the game

Although United dominated for large spells, Crystal Palace had their chances. Eberechi Eze nearly broke the deadlock before halftime, but André Onana was quick to react, parrying the shot from a dangerous position. Garnacho continued to trouble Palace’s defense and hit the crossbar shortly before the break, but United was unable to convert their pressure into goals. The second half played out much like the first, with United on the front foot but struggling to get past Henderson. Joshua Zirkzee, leading the attack, found little joy against the Palace backline, and even when Bruno Fernandes came close with a curling effort, the ball flew narrowly wide.

Henderson and Onana shine

As the game progressed, Palace began to find more space on the counterattack. Onana was called into action again, making a double save to deny Eddie Nketiah and Ismaila Sarr in quick succession. Later, Eze had another golden opportunity, but his shot rolled agonizingly wide of the post, keeping the score level. Ten Hag introduced Rasmus Højlund late in the game, hoping the Danish striker could provide a moment of magic, but Palace held firm. Henderson continued his impressive performance, making another key save from Garnacho, and Crystal Palace saw out the remaining minutes to secure a hard-earned point.

Next steps for United

After two promising wins, Manchester United was left frustrated by Henderson’s heroics, failing to capitalize on their dominance at Selhurst Park. With six points from their last three matches, United will now shift their focus to the upcoming fixtures, looking to regain momentum and climb further up the Premier League table.
