Liverpool narrowly beats Crystal Palace

Liverpool maintained their position at the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. In his first Premier League start of the season, Cody Gakpo made an immediate impact by providing the crucial assist for Diogo Jota's winning goal.

Jota’s key contribution

Crystal Palace began the match with early energy, finding the back of the net within 30 seconds, only for Eddie Nketiah’s goal to be ruled out for offside. Liverpool quickly responded by taking control of the game. In the 9th minute, Cody Gakpo, starting in the league for the first time this season, was played into space. The forward delivered a precise low cross to Diogo Jota, who calmly finished to give Liverpool a 1-0 lead. Jota had additional opportunities to extend the lead, with Ryan Gravenberch and Trent Alexander-Arnold setting him up, but he couldn’t convert the chances. Despite Liverpool’s dominance, they were unable to add to their tally.

Palace threatens but Alisson stands strong

Crystal Palace nearly found an equalizer just before halftime when Ismaïla Sarr was through on goal, but Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson made a crucial save to preserve the lead. The Brazilian had been solid throughout the match but was forced to leave the field late in the game due to an injury. Alisson’s exit meant a debut for Czech goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros, who recently joined from Sturm Graz. Jaros stepped up in the closing stages, helping Liverpool hold onto their lead and secure all three points.

Liverpool remains on top

With this hard-earned victory, Liverpool continues to lead the Premier League, with Arsenal and Manchester City trailing behind after more difficult matches. Arne Slot’s team showed resilience and control, managing the game well despite late pressure from the home side. The win not only keeps Liverpool at the top of the table but also highlights Gakpo’s growing influence as he finds his form in the starting lineup.
