Liverpool thrashes Tottenham in six-goal masterclass
Liverpool put on a spectacular attacking display in North London, dismantling Tottenham Hotspur 6-3 to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table. Arne Slot’s side, fueled by standout performances from Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai, demonstrated their dominance in a match that left Spurs reeling and fans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium stunned.
Gakpo earns starting spot amid a Dutch presence
With Cody Gakpo earning the nod over Diogo Jota and Darwin Núñez, Liverpool featured three Dutch players in the starting XI, alongside Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch. For Tottenham, the absence of Micky van de Ven due to injury was keenly felt, as the hosts struggled to contain Liverpool’s relentless attack.
Early dominance and fluid attacking play
Liverpool wasted no time asserting their authority. In the 23rd minute, Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a pinpoint cross that Luis Díaz headed past Fraser Forster to make it 1-0. The visitors had already looked dangerous and continued to dominate after taking the lead. In the 36th minute, Liverpool doubled their advantage. Andy Robertson’s cross found Dominik Szoboszlai in a threatening position, but when the Hungarian was crowded out by the Spurs defense, Alexis Mac Allister pounced on the loose ball to make it 2-0. The dynamic movement of Liverpool’s midfielders, frequently appearing in advanced positions, left Tottenham’s defense overwhelmed.
A glimmer of hope for Spurs before Szoboszlai strikes again
Tottenham briefly clawed their way back into the match in the 41st minute when James Maddison capitalized on a rare Liverpool mistake during the buildup, firing past Alisson to make it 2-1. However, Szoboszlai restored Liverpool’s two-goal cushion just before halftime. A quick counterattack orchestrated by Mohamed Salah ended with Szoboszlai slotting home to make it 3-1.
Salah shines in the second half
If Slot’s halftime message was to push for more goals, his players delivered. The second half opened with another Liverpool barrage, and in the 50th minute, Salah tapped in from close range after a chaotic scramble in the box, making it 4-1. The goal marked Salah’s 14th in the Premier League this season, and his earlier assist had already cemented his status as the first player in Premier League history to reach double digits in both goals and assists before Christmas. Salah wasn’t done. In the 61st minute, he capped off a flowing team move, finishing a selfless pass from Szoboszlai to make it 5-1. Gakpo had played a key role in the buildup, feeding Szoboszlai, who unselfishly set up Salah for a simple finish.
Tottenham’s late flourish falls short
Despite the lopsided scoreline, Tottenham showed flashes of their attacking potential in the closing stages. Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke each found the net, narrowing the gap to 5-3 and providing brief hope for Spurs fans. However, Liverpool responded in the 85th minute, as Díaz sealed the victory with a composed finish into the far corner after being set up by Salah.
