Manchester United sinks further after 1-3 defeat to Brighton
Manchester United's struggles in the Premier League continued as they fell to a 1-3 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford. Despite showing flashes of promise, Rúben Amorim’s men failed to capitalize on their chances and were punished by a clinical Brighton side. The match began disastrously for United, with Brighton taking the lead within five minutes. Former Feyenoord winger Yankuba Minteh broke down the flank and delivered a perfect finish to make it 0-1, stunning the home crowd. United, desperate to climb out of their 13th-place rut, found themselves on the back foot once again.
Fernandes equalizes from the spot
Man United clawed their way back into the match before halftime. A clumsy challenge by Carlos Baleba on Joshua Zirkzee in the penalty area handed United a lifeline. Captain Bruno Fernandes stepped up to the spot and made no mistake, slotting the penalty home to level the score at 1-1. The goal gave United a glimmer of hope heading into the break. The second half brought more heartbreak for United. In the 53rd minute, João Pedro seemed to restore Brighton’s lead with a composed finish, but VAR ruled out the goal due to a foul by Jan Paul van Hecke in the build-up. However, Brighton’s pressure eventually paid off. In the 60th minute, Minteh provided a pinpoint cross that Kaoru Mitoma converted, putting Brighton ahead 1-2. A disastrous moment from André Onana in the 75th minute sealed United’s fate. The Cameroonian goalkeeper failed to hold onto a routine cross, gifting the ball to Georginio Rutter, who made no mistake in doubling Brighton’s advantage. The 1-3 scoreline deflated United, and the team showed little sign of recovery as the final whistle approached.
United’s woes continue
The loss leaves Manchester United in a precarious position, still mired in 13th place in the Premier League standings. Rúben Amorim’s side has now suffered yet another setback in what has been a disappointing campaign so far. The lack of consistency and defensive errors continue to haunt the team, with pressure mounting on both the manager and players to turn things around. For Brighton, the victory was another testament to their impressive form this season. With Minteh and Mitoma leading the charge, and capitalizing on errors from the opposition, they showcased the efficiency and confidence that has made them a formidable side. As United searches for answers to their ongoing struggles, Brighton moves closer to their aspirations of European football, proving once again why they are one of the Premier League’s rising forces. For the Red Devils, however, time is running out to salvage their season.
