Brighton dominates Chelsea with 3-0 win

Brighton & Hove Albion delivered a commanding performance on Friday night, securing a 3-0 victory over Chelsea at the Amex Stadium. A standout display from Yankuba Minteh, who scored twice, and an assist from goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen ensured a crucial win for the Seagulls as they bounced back from their recent heavy defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Brighton takes control early

Chelsea, currently fourth in the Premier League, struggled to impose themselves against a well-organized Brighton side. The home team started confidently, and in the 27th minute, they found the breakthrough in spectacular fashion. Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen played a pinpoint long pass over the Chelsea defense, which Kaoru Mitoma controlled beautifully before calmly slotting past Filip Jörgensen to make it 1-0. Chelsea failed to respond effectively, and Brighton continued to dominate proceedings. Their pressure paid off again in the 38th minute when Danny Welbeck set up Minteh, who struck a composed finish to double Brighton’s lead. The 20-year-old Gambian winger, who was loaned to Feyenoord last season, was a constant threat down the flank and proved too much for Chelsea’s defense to handle.

Minteh seals the win

Brighton remained in control after the break, keeping Chelsea at bay while looking to extend their lead. In the 63rd minute, Welbeck once again played the role of provider, dribbling past his marker before finding Minteh, who fired home his second goal of the match. The summer signing from Newcastle United now has five goals and three assists in 23 games for Brighton, continuing to impress in his debut Premier League season. Chelsea, meanwhile, failed to create any significant chances, looking out of ideas against Brighton’s solid defensive setup. Despite fielding a strong lineup, Enzo Maresca’s side lacked the attacking edge needed to break through, allowing Brighton to comfortably see out the match.

Brighton closes the gap, Chelsea at risk of dropping places

The victory lifts Brighton to eighth place with 37 points, though they could be overtaken by Aston Villa and Fulham later in the weekend. Meanwhile, Chelsea remains fourth with 43 points, but their position is under threat, with Manchester City and Newcastle United capable of surpassing them if they win their upcoming fixtures. For Brighton, this result provides a significant morale boost following their 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Nottingham Forest two weeks ago. With Verbruggen, Jan Paul van Hecke, and Joël Veltman continuing to play key roles, manager Fabian Hürzeler will hope this win can serve as a turning point in their push for European qualification.

Chelsea, on the other hand, must quickly regroup after a lackluster performance. With Liverpool pulling away at the top of the table, Maresca’s men will need to find consistency to remain in the hunt for a Champions League spot as the season enters a crucial phase.
