Liverpool battles past Wolves in the Premier League
Liverpool secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield, extending their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points over Arsenal. Arne Slot was still on the touchline, awaiting a decision on his suspension following a red card in the Merseyside derby against Everton. Despite a nervy finish, goals from Luis Díaz and Mohamed Salah ensured the Reds maintained momentum.
A challenging evening for Liverpool
Liverpool entered the match without the injured Cody Gakpo but started with Ryan Gravenberch and Virgil van Dijk in the lineup. Slot, still eligible to coach his team while awaiting his ban, saw his side take an early lead.
Wolves, showing no fear at Anfield, pressed high and looked dangerous in the opening exchanges. However, their aggressive approach left them exposed. In the 15th minute, Díaz capitalized on a defensive lapse and bundled the ball home after a fast break, putting Liverpool ahead 1-0. Twenty minutes later, Díaz was once again in the thick of the action. The Colombian was brought down by Wolves goalkeeper José Sá in the penalty area, and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Mohamed Salah stepped up and converted coolly, extending Liverpool’s advantage to 2-0.
Wolves fight back, but Liverpool holds on
Wolves came out stronger in the second half, with substitute Marshall Munetsi nearly pulling one back, but Alisson denied the Zimbabwean debutant with an excellent save. However, Liverpool’s complacency allowed the visitors back into the match. In the 69th minute, Matheus Cunha struck a beautiful effort into the far corner, making it 2-1 and setting up a tense final 20 minutes. Wolves pushed forward, but Liverpool’s defense, marshaled by Van Dijk, held firm. Slot’s relief was evident at the final whistle as his team saw out the win without further scares.
Tottenham pushes United to fifteenth place
Elsewhere in the Premier League, Manchester United’s struggles deepened with a 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur. James Maddison scored the only goal of the match after 13 minutes, handing Spurs their first home league win since November. United, plagued by injuries and poor form, suffered their twelfth defeat in 25 matches, slipping to a shocking fifteenth place in the table. Dutch internationals Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee played the full match, but they were unable to turn United’s fortunes around.
Focus can't be turned to the EFL Cup final yet
While Liverpool will celebrate their latest victory, attention is also on the EFL Cup final against Newcastle United on March 16. The Reds will be aiming to lift their first silverware under Slot, who could be serving a touchline ban by then. But before the EFL Cup final, there are some very important games to be played. As the Premier League title race intensifies and cup glory beckons, Slot’s Liverpool remains the team to beat this season.
