Arsenal will appear in the knock-out stages of the Champions League for the 13th consecutive year, after beating Montpelier 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal struggled in the first half, losing possession on a number of occasions due to a lack of concentration, and their only chance came when Koscielny headed the ball against the woodwork. The French champions were defeated by two goals that came after the break. Jack Wilshere found himself gifted the ball from a Giroud header, and he calmly nipped the ball over Geoffrey Jourdren into the net, for his first goal in nearly two years. Lukas Podolski then guaranteed the win with a stunning volley to send the home crowd wild.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid brought misery to the Etihad Stadium, holding Roberto Mancini's Manchester City to a 1-1 draw, meaning for the second successive year, City have been eliminated in the group stage. Karim Benzema put Madrid one up in the 10th minute, but it could have been more, after Cristiano Ronaldo saw his effort saved on the line and Sami Khedira missed a couple of chances. In the 74th minute, Alvaro Arbeloa earned his second yellow card of the match after he fouled Sergio Aguero in the area and conceded a penalty. Aguero duly dispatched the spotkick, but the burst of hope didn't last long, and they couldn't score another. The loss left them lying at the bottom of Group D.
