Spanish Supercup: FC Barcelona 3-2 Real Madrid - SuperMessi

The Nou Camp hosted an exhilarating five goal thriller between between Barcelona and Real Madrid in the first leg of their Spanish Super Cup meeting. It was the first Clasico of the season, and the first with Tito Vilanova in charge of Barcelona, after Pep Guardiola departed at the end of last season. Barcelona will go into the second-leg at the Bernabéu with a one goal advantage.

Both teams played conservatively in the first half. Barcelona seemed the more dominant team, but the Madrid defense was rock solid. The teams went in at half time without a goal. It was all change when they came out for the second half though, with both teams probing into the opposite areas, and just before the hour mark Cristiano Ronaldo put Madrid one up with a header from a Mesut Özil cross. The celebrations didn't last long. Barcelona equalised two minutes later with Javier Mascherano passing the ball to Pedro who set himself up with a fine shot that went past Iker Casillas to make it 1-1.

Both sides then had chances, before Ramos brought down Iniesta in the box in the 69th minute and the referee rightly awarded a penalty. Lionel Messi stepped up to take it and duly dispatched it into the back of the net. Barcelona went 3-1 up in the 78th minute, Iniesta hitting a superbly weighted ball past two Madrid defenders that Xavi latched onto and coolly put past Casillas. Barcelona were looking to go into the second-leg with a two goal advantage, but in the dying stages of the game, Barça keeper Valdes unusually lost possession and the ball was picked up by Di Maria, who managed to score from inside the six yard box. So Barcelona go into the second-leg slight favourites, with a bit more hard work to do after the late mistake from Valdes.
